The University of Puerto Rico (UPR) was founded in 1903. In 1925, the firm of Bennet-Parsons-Frost was contracted to design a master plan which resulted in a classical-cloister configuration with a strong East West axis. Their classical design was based on the historical California Mission or Spanish Revival style.
Beginning in 1926, the Spanish Revival aesthetic was adopted by the Architects in charge of designing the buildings of the Quadrangle – committed to this architectural style convinced it was appropriate to the colony, that struggled with its cultural identity after the 1898 change in sovereignty - from Spain to North America.
The Quadrangle took shape through a twenty-five-year period, being the central, unifying plan for the main UPR campus. Upon intense expansion, the rest of the campus grew to be the principal protagonist educating many that forged modern Puerto Rico.
Since 2002, our firm has undertaken various projects within the historic Quadrangle; its rehabilitation continues with the reconstruction of the Registrador and Eugenio María de Hostos buildings. Both structures are in a deplorable state, abandoned and unoccupied for most of the last two (2) decades.
This adaptive reuse project will house the new academic facilities for the School of Communication andInformation Technology, due to the loss of their former building as a result of devastating Hurricane María in 2017. Once completed, an active, new School of Communication and Information Technology will inject - much needed - new life to the historic quadrangle.
