El Condominio Plaza, is a multistory apartment complex with a restaurant and a legendary local jewelry store on the ground floor (Joyería Cátala). Constructed in the 1930’s, it’s distinguished for its zig-zag balcony configuration with concrete balustrades and a vestibule ornamented with polychromatic terracotta and Arabesque tiles. The upper levels are accessed through a stairwell that ‘wraps’ around the elevator that maintain their original design features.

The typical floor plan is a symmetric, two (2) apartments per floor that contain a central interior patio that separate the apartments and one secondary patio on each side of the party walls for ventilation and natural light for both dwellings (two in total). Its street frontage shares adjoining walls with the González Padín Building and the New York Department Store (now, Marshall’s), and has a privileged overview of the Plaza de Armas and Historic City Hall of San Juan. Given this configuration and location, it’s deceptively breezy and naturally illuminated throughout the day, a ‘luxury’ for Old San Juan living.
